Perché oggi tutti vogliono pedalare gli Erei? Probabilmente, per un misto fra tradizione ciclistica e capacità organizzative. Scopriamolo insieme!

Gli Erei sono rilievi che ornano l’interno della Sicilia e quasi sembrano cucire i Monti Iblei, che ne occupano l’angolo sud orientale, con le Madonie, cime che lungo il crinale tirrenico rappresentano la prosecuzione dei Peloritani e poi dei Nebrodi, propaggini siciliane dell’appennino calabro.

Erano i primi mesi del 1999, transitando più volte per lavoro sulla SS 124, si rimaneva affascinati dal “ponte con curva”, un tratto della ferrovia dismessa che un tempo univa Caltagirone e la Stazione Dittaino, luoghi serviti da linee allora e tuttora in esercizio. Fu l’occasione per chiedere un incontro con il Sindaco di San Michele, al termine del quale l’Assessore allo Sport ci accompagnò per le piste sterrate della Montagna. E fu amore a prima vista!

Pochi mesi dopo, su un percorso affascinante e complesso ricavato sulle Montagne Ganzaria e Scala, ricadenti rispettivamente nei comuni di San Michele di Ganzaria e di Caltagirone, si celebrava la prima mezzofondo siciliana di mtb. Una prova di 35 km che poi, per allungamento del percorso e per la sua durezza, presto meritò l’appellativo di Granfondo. Una manifestazione cui seguirono altre 7, l’ultima delle quali fu inserita nel Campionato nazionale, tutte organizzate da Acquaterrabike Catania con l’entusiastico sostegno delle amministrazioni dell’epoca.

Non tutti sanno che da quella granfondo del 1999 nacque il primo campionato regionale mtb, assoluta novità di quei tempi, sotto l’egida dell’ente di promozione sportiva UDACE, cui seguì analogo campionato regionale FCI. Più sopra uno schizzo del percorso, in un tempo in cui i GPS dovevano ancora arrivare. A fianco, la locandina dell’ultima granfondo, quella del 2006 (foto Ettore Raneri).

Nei primi anni duemila, mentre Montagna Ganzaria si faceva cuore pulsante della mtb agonistica e escursionistica, il tratto di ferrovia dismessa che univa i due comuni si trasformava in una Greenway grazie al progetto dell’architetto calatino Marco Navarra, poi premiato vincitore a Venezia.

Conclusasi quella prima serie di eventi agonistici, le Montagna Ganzaria e Scala continuavano ad essere punti attrattori per i naturalisti, in particolare per gli amanti delle orchidee, e per gli escursionisti a piedi. Mentre, il successo delle gare costituì un forte richiamo anche per ciclisti non agonisti.

Rimasero memorabili gli eventi di Orienteering su mtb, impegnativi, ma anche terribilmente divertenti. Mentre, gli appassionati di parapendio trovavano – e trovano – sulla Montagna Scala un perfetto luogo di lancio.

I tempi cambiano, i Cammini in Sicilia si moltiplicano ed ecco che San Michele di Ganzaria diventa importante punto di passaggio del Cammino di San Giacomo. Ideato nel 2020, si pone subito in cima fra i Cammini che solcano l’Isola, per organizzazione e per i grandi paesaggi offerti dagli Erei. Termina nell’affascinante borgo di Capizzi, arroccato sui monti Nebrodi, quasi a suggellare il ruolo di cerniera assunto da montagna Ganzaria fra il Sud est siciliano e i rilievi tirrenici.

Bussa alle porte il 2024 ed è un anno nel quale il grande ciclismo torna nei luoghi del primo amore. È anche l’anno della conferenza voluta dall’Amministrazione sulle grandi opportunità offerte al territorio dal turismo lento; ma anche del ritorno delle Granfondo e della consacrazione del Brevetto dei 200 km. Proprio facendo perno su San Michele di Ganzaria, nel 2026 giungeranno al terzo appuntamento sia la nuova serie di Granfondo mtb, sia il Brevetto.

Degli eventi di mtb l’ASD Eagle Caltagirone di Angelo Murgo è co – organizzatrice insieme all’ASD Aquila Ganzaria, presidente Giuseppe Lo Tauro; quest’ultima è anche unica organizzatrice del Brevetto.

La prossima Granfondo mtb è fissata per il giorno 17 maggio prossimo, fra piste e single trek che solcano la Montagna. Si può essere certissimi che anche questa edizione entusiasmerà gli appassionati della mtb; e non sarà l’ultimo evento ciclistico del 2026!

The Erei are a range of hills that adorn the interior of Sicily and seem almost to link the Iblei Mountains, which occupy the south-eastern corner of the island, with the Madonie, peaks which, along the Tyrrhenian ridge, form a continuation of the Peloritani and then the Nebrodi, the Sicilian foothills of the Calabrian Apennines.

It was early 1999. Having travelled along the SS 124 several times on business, we were captivated by the ‘curved bridge’ – a section of disused railway that once linked Caltagirone and Dittaino Station, both of which were served by lines that were in operation then and still are today. It was the perfect opportunity to request a meeting with the Mayor of San Michele, after which the Councillor for Sport accompanied us along the dirt tracks of the mountain. And it was love at first sight!

few months later, the first Sicilian MTB Granfondo was held on a fascinating and challenging route through the Ganzaria and Scala mountains, located in the municipalities of San Michele di Ganzaria and Caltagirone respectively. This 35-kilometre race soon earned the title of Granfondo due to the extension of the route and its demanding nature. This event was followed by seven more, the last of which was included in the

National Championship, all organised by Acquaterrabike Catania with the enthusiastic support of the local authorities at the time.

Not everyone knows that the first regional MTB championship – a complete novelty at the time – was born out of that 1999 long-distance race, organised under the auspices of the sports promotion body UDACE, and was later followed by a similar FCI regional championship. In the early 2000s, as Montagna Ganzaria became the beating heart of competitive and recreational mountain biking, the disused railway line linking the two municipalities was transformed into a Greenway thanks to a project by Calatino architect Marco Navarra, who went on to win an award in Venice.

Once that first series of competitive events had come to an end, the Ganzaria and Scala mountains continued to be major attractions for naturalists – particularly orchid enthusiasts – and for hikers. Meanwhile, the success of the races also proved a strong draw for non-competitive cyclists.

The MTB orienteering events were truly memorable – challenging, yet incredibly fun. Meanwhile, paragliding enthusiasts found – and still find – Montagna Scala to be the perfect launch site.

Times change, and as the number of walking routes in Sicily grows, San Michele di Ganzaria has emerged as a key stop on the Way of St James. Conceived in 2020, it has quickly established itself as one of the leading routes across the island, thanks to its organisation and the stunning landscapes of the Erei Mountains. It ends in the charming village of Capizzi, perched on the Nebrodi Mountains, as if to seal the pivotal role played by Mount Ganzaria between south-eastern Sicily and the Tyrrhenian hills.

2024 is just around the corner, and it is a year in which elite cycling returns to the places where it all began. It is also the year of the conference organised by the local council on the great opportunities offered to the region by slow tourism; but also the return of the Granfondo events and the establishment of the 200 km Brevetto. With San Michele di Ganzaria at its heart, both the new series of Granfondo MTB events and the Brevetto will reach their third edition in 2026.
