Oggi sperimenteremo insieme il “Potere del Paesaggio”!

La nostra meta è il Castello di Donnafugata, sontuosa costruzione gentilizia del tardo ‘800, oggi acquisita al patrimonio pubblico del Comune di Ragusa e visitabile in giorni e orari che troverete sul sito dedicato. La adorna un ricco giardino mediterraneo, anch’esso visitabile, scrigno che custodisce la perla di un famoso Labirinto. Probabilmente, insieme al Castello, lo avrete visto più volte, al cinema o alla televisione. Per comprendere perché vi porto con me in questa breve, ma intrigante ascesa nel paesaggio ibleo dobbiamo passare la parola ai pedali.

Dalla rotatoria posta sulla strada provinciale SP 20 cominciamo a salire per la SP 21, la stradina secondaria che ci porterà a destinazione. Un bunker risalente alla II guerra mondiale quasi ci ammonisce in merito alla decisione che abbiamo appena preso. Infatti, lo stretto nastro d’asfalto che sale scortato da muretti di pietra calcarea subito risulterà impegnativo per i meno allenati.

La pendenza, però, si addolcisce e appare sulla destra una cava ricca di verde che ci farà compagnia fino al raggiungimento della nostra meta. Alla nostra sinistra, sui campi di erbe foraggere punteggiano lo sguardo alberi di carrubi, i cui tronchi sono spesso protetti da muretti a secco costruiti con bianche pietre calcaree, dando luogo ad un elemento del paesaggio che è tipicamente ibleo, perciò unico nel suo genere. Continuiamo a salire, e non sarà raro ricevere sguardi incuriositi da vacche impegnate a pascolare. Noi, però, respingeremo la tentazione di entrare nei campi per ricambiare da vicino. Puntigliosi cani pastore … o tori gelosi possono trovarsi poco distanti; ma va evitato anche l’involontario urto contro un mammifero di 600 kg, corna a parte, intimorito dalla vicinanza di un umano sconosciuto.

Più avanti, in alto a sinistra “a ore 11” appare il Castello, con i suoi punti ristoro, la gelateria, la stazione ferroviaria “Donnafugata” funzionante in certi periodi dell’anno. Già che ci siete, non dimenticate di fare una visita alla trattoria “Al Castello”, di salutare il gestore Giovanni e la sua bravissima equipe, e di godervi una deliziosa “scaccia” al pomodoro e formaggio oppure ai tanti altri gusti. Di sicuro, un paio di bicchieri di rosso ci starebbero proprio! Peccato che, per un ritorno in sicurezza, la bici abbia bisogno di due mani sul manubrio…

Per finire… tornando all’inizio. Dopo la rampa iniziale, non avete avuto l’impressione che i pedali (quasi) girassero da soli? È un’illusione, una formidabile illusione dovuta al “Potere del Paesaggio”, Il Paesaggio Ibleo. Capace di sprigionare incantesimi … e di spingere sui pedali al posto tuo!

Questo breve tratto fa parte della ben più lunga “Ciclovia Sud Est” (conosciuta anche come “Ciclovia FUA”), alla quale questo sito web dedica una sezione propria. Per la sua lunghezza in salita (circa 5 km) può essere consigliato come allenamento in preparazione di giri più lunghi, eventualmente ripetendolo più volte, avendo l’accortezza scegliere un cambio adatto al fine di procedere sempre in scioltezza con le gambe.

The Power of Landscape

Today we’re going to experience the ‘Power of Landscape’ together!

Our destination is Donnafugata Castle, a sumptuous late 19th-century stately home, now part of the public heritage of the Municipality of Ragusa and open to visitors on the days and at the times listed on the dedicated website. It is adorned by a lush Mediterranean garden, which is also open to the public, a treasure trove that holds the gem of a famous maze. You have probably seen it, along with the Castle, many times before, at the cinema or on television. To understand why I am taking you with me on this short but intriguing climb through the Iblean landscape, we must let the pedals do the talking.

From the roundabout on the SP 20 provincial road, we begin the climb up the SP 21, the narrow side road that will take us to our destination. A World War II-era bunker seems almost to caution us about the decision we have just made. Indeed, the narrow strip of tarmac that winds its way upwards, flanked by limestone walls, will soon prove challenging for those who are less fit.

The slope, however, levels out and a lush, green quarry appears on the right, which will accompany us until we reach our destination. To our left, carob trees dot the forage fields, their trunks often protected by dry stone walls built from white limestone, creating a landscape feature that is typically Iblean and therefore unique. We continue to climb, and it is not uncommon to catch curious glances from cows busy grazing. We, however, will resist the temptation to enter the fields to return their gaze from close quarters. Petty shepherd dogs… or jealous bulls may be nearby; but one must also avoid an accidental collision with a 600-kg mammal, horns aside, startled by the proximity of an unknown human.

Further on, at the top left – at the “11 o’clock” position – you’ll see the Castle, with its cafés, ice-cream parlour and the “Donnafugata” railway station, which operates at certain times of the year. While you’re there, don’t forget to pop into the “Al Castello” trattoria, say hello to the manager Giovanni and his brilliant team, and enjoy a delicious “scaccia” with tomato and cheese or one of the many other flavours. A couple of glasses of red wine would certainly go down a treat! It’s just a shame that, to get back safely, you need both hands on the handlebars…

To finish… let’s go back to the start. After the initial climb, didn’t you get the impression that the pedals were (almost) turning by themselves? It’s an illusion – a marvellous illusion created by the “Power of the Landscape”, the Iblean landscape. It has the power to cast spells… and to push the pedals for you!

This short stretch forms part of the much longer “Ciclovia Sud Est” (also known as the “Ciclovia FUA”), to which this website devotes a separate section. Due to its length uphill (around 5 km), it can be recommended as training in preparation for longer rides, possibly repeating it several times, taking care to choose a suitable gear ratio so as to always pedal smoothly.
